Mahara Hui goes regional

Hello,

It's this time of the year again, when you should be expecting a call for proposals for next year's Mahara Hui. Instead, we would like to propose a different idea.

During the organization of the first two hui, we've heard from some potential participants that it is not possible for them to get approval for travel. To increase access to the knowledge of other Mahara users, we were thinking of having smaller regional events next year and a bigger national one in 2017 and alternate the regional with the national events.

We could envisage the following regions:

  • Auckland
  • The Waikato
  • Wellington
  • Christchurch
  • and potentially some Australian locations ;-)

The regional events could run from 10 a.m. to about 4 p.m. (or shorter) to allow people who do have a bit of a drive to arrive in the morning and leave on the same day. They would also be less time intensive to organize and could be run like a Mahara User Group with an informal call for presentation / workshop / discussion topics. We have had a very successful first Mahara User Group meeting last year at AUT University (shorter than the above mentioned 6 hours) that could serve as inspiration for other such meetings.

Since it would still be useful to come together in a larger group every so often, a bigger Mahara Hui could be organized every other year.

What do you think?

Cheers

Kristina

Hello,

Since yesterday I've received a number of emails appreciating the idea of smaller Mahara Hui. This seems to be a good way forward. How can we now make that happen?

Anyone can run a small Mahara Hui (Kiwi Mahara User Group meetings) and we'll support them as best as we can with access here to the site so that information can be put up and also insight into running a hui. We do want to keep the effort needed for running these smaller events low and have seen that happen nicely in other places, esp. the Mahara User Group in New York. It may be more shoulder tapping for presentations or asking here on the site rather than a full CFP. The principle is: Keep it simple, affordable and accessible to Mahara enthusiasts around the country / region.

If you are interested in running a small Mahara Hui in your region, please get in touch with me at kristina@catalyst.net.nz and we can discuss it further. Ideally, organizers will have a room available at no or little cost that could host between 20 and 30 (or a few more) people. Lunch could be BYO, but the availability of coffee / tea would be appreciated so that there may even be no event fee for participants.

The events don't need to be run at the same time, but rather can be spread out over the year so they are held at times that are suitable for the users in that region.

Please let me know if you have any questions or ideas for the events. I am excited for next year's.

Cheers

Kristina

Dear Kristina,

I francophone countries, I have suggested last year to organize local Mahara Hui I have called μHui (mu  in Greek meaning micro so "MuHui" or micro Hui).

Already we had 3 announced μHui since then in France and Switzerland.

We agreed on a format and some rules to organize Mahara μHui francophone and the feedback I had so far are all positives.

So I like and support the idea of many regional Mahara Hui, and sometimes (every two years) a global Mahara Hui in each country. This should foster the development of good eP practices and also let people to address, in smaller groups, local, more concrete and personal issues, and develop strong collaboration around Mahara.

Cheers,

-dajan

Hello dajan,

I didn't know that there were smaller conferences already in France and Switzerland. Please let the organizers know to send me there dates so I can include them in the Mahara events calendar at https://mahara.org/events

I'm still not sure whether the smaller events should simply be called Mahara User Group meetings or Mahara Hui with the name of the town added to it. For the smaller events it could be "Mahara Hui Tauranga", "Mahara Hui Wellington" etc. and the bigger one could be "Mahara Hui New Zealand" / "Mahara Hui Oceania".

Personally, I'm not too fond of adding a Greek character in front of the "hui" because I find it less readable because people would wonder how to pronounce it and it also takes a bit to find the character in a character map. ;-)

What do others think?

Cheers

Kia ora all, I've had a talk with the WCEL team at the University of Waikato and we would be interested in hosting a one day Mahara hui event during 2016.

Hello Stephen,

Thank you very much for your interest. Anne Stevens, Pascale Hyboud-Peron and Ian Musson are also interested. Go Waikato - Tauranga region! Please join them.

Since there is so much interest from your region, I wonder if we should think about holding Mahara Hui 2017 there. :-)

Cheers
