Why should you attend Mahara Hui?

Mahara Hui offers you the unique opportunity in the Southern Hemisphere to meet Mahara users and enthusiasts from many different walks of life. Presenters are school teachers, university lecturers, organisational learning support staff, independent consultants supporting organisations with professional development, and developers. Since the development of Mahara takes place to a large extend in Wellington, you will also be able to meet the members of the core Mahara development team and chat with them about everything Mahara.

Although we group presentations into specific areas, please do not feel constrained by that classification, but also attend sessions that may seem to be in a different context than you work in as they may give you very good insight into practices that you can transfer to your own context. In addition, you can also look forward to specific areas that might be of interest to you.

If you are a school teacher...

you will be able to learn how teachers in New Zealand and Australia use Mahara at school with their students but also for professional development. Mahara, often in the form of MyPortfolio.school.nz in New Zealand, is used for creating and working on student ePortfolios as well as for teacher appraisal and registration. Numerous presentations at Mahara Hui will showcase the experiences from schools that have been using the system for some time already allowing you to gain insight into their practices and ask questions to further your own understanding of using Mahara with your students or also as staff at a school.

If you are a university lecturer...

you will have the chance to connect with various university instructors who present on the implementation of Mahara at their institutions and also discuss ways forward to integrate the use of ePortfolios more into the curriculum and also adapt Mahara to their specific requirements.

If you are a learning technologist / learning support staff in an organisation...

you will be able to find out how professional organisations deal with the changing demands on their staff in regards to documenting professional development and learning. You will see how organisations make excellent use of templates to guide their staff in the creation of their portfolios and how processes evolved over time.

If you are a developer...

you will meet users of the software that you are supporting to enhance and can talk with them about their experiences and learn in the presentations of how they use Mahara. You will also have the chance to work with others on Mahara itself during the one-day hackfest on 21 March 2014.
